New Leither

The New Leither -the piper
Louise Marshall Millington, originally from just outside Gretna, has been playing the bagpipes since the age of nine. Very much a family tradition, her dad was the Gretna Piper for over 44 years, until he passed away in 1999. Her two brothers also played the pipes and her sister was a Highland dancer. Louise came to Edinburgh when she was 18 to study German, then went to live in Germany for a few years before returning to Leith where she and her husband Mark settled with their two children, Iona and Rory. She has lived in Leith for the best part of 18 years. I met up with Louise in the Victoria bar on Leith Walk.

Leith Church

Leith based church expands to gorgie
A Leith based church has recently opened the doors to its second building at the other end of the city after attendance figures shot from 40 - 500 people in the last four years.

Destiny church, who originated in Glasgow, and have congregations in other parts of Britain as well as abroad, held their first service at their new home - the former Bingo hall on Gorgie road - at the end of last month. They will now serve both sides of Edinburgh; with an 11am Sunday service in Gorgie; whilst continuing with their 6.30pm evening service in Casselbank Street, Leith - one congregation; two locations.

They have received a warm welcome from other churches in the Gorgie district, and hope to duplicate their wide range of outreach projects/ initiatives/activities that they offer to the community of Leith, at their new centre in the west of the city.

Peter Anderson, Pastor of Destiny Church Edinburgh, told the Leither: ‘Our aim is that church should be an exciting and engaging experience, a place where people from all different backgrounds are welcomed, inspired, and equipped to face life’s challenges. For us, church isn’t just the few hours together on a Sunday, it’s also the opportunity throughout the week to meaningfully benefit and make a difference in the community - because we know that often it is better “felt than telt“. It’s been great to see the congregation grow and we’re excited to now have services and community projects in both Leith and Gorgie’.
